CITIES: A GROWING POPULATION AND A GROWING IMPACT

Cities are the centre of human activity. Today, over 55% of the global population lives in cities1, generating 80% of global GDP.2 As the 21st Century progresses, the majority of global population growth is expected to occur in cities. By 2050, the share of people living in cities is expected to reach 68%1. Without effective management, this rapid growth of cities can aggregate and aggravate key societal challenges, from unemployment and inequality, to pollution and climate change.
